PRACTITIONER SCRIPT – Flashlight Body Scan for Early Interoception Development
The Flashlight Body Scan is a calm, gentle read-aloud script that helps young children notice how their bodies feel, one part at a time. Using the image of a soft, warm “magic flashlight”, practitioners guide children slowly from toes to head, with simple actions at each stage: wiggling toes, squeezing legs then letting them go floppy like spaghetti, a hand on the heart, fists that open like flowers, shoulders that lift and drop, and a scrunched “raisin face” that softens. The script opens with Balloon Belly Breathing to help the group settle, closes with a gentle stretch and ends with an optional “little chat” to help children put what they noticed into words, pointing or movement. Written to be read slowly and softly in around 5-7 minutes, with clear pause cues and a shorter version for under-3s or a restless day, it’s an easy way to build early interoception into the early years day. It pairs naturally with our My Body Speeds check-in.
