Questionnaire: Before You Assume Why….

Before You Assume Why is a short, reflective quiz that helps adults see behaviour through a different lens, starting with their own experience. Over five steps, it asks you to recall a time you felt judged or misunderstood, name what the other person couldn’t see (stress, tiredness, overwhelm, trying to remember too much), and then turn that same thinking towards a child or young person you sometimes find yourself judging. You’ll tick the executive function skills that could be driving the behaviour you’re seeing, consider how stress, environment, sensory load, tiredness or peer pressure may be making those skills harder to access, and finish by flipping the judgement into something you could ask or try. It’s a quick, personal way to build empathy and put curiosity before assumption, ideal for staff training, CPD sessions or individual reflection, and a natural companion to our Before You Assume Why flyer.

What's included with the Questionnaire: Before You Assume Why….

  • A two-page, five-step reflective quiz that moves from your own experience of being judged to a young person’s behaviour
  • Tick-box prompts covering all 11 executive function skills, plus the factors that can make them harder to access
  • A “Flip the Judgement” action space and a four-question takeaway: What do I know? What have I assumed? What EF skill might be involved? What could help?

Why we developed the Questionnaire: Before You Assume Why….

Most of us know what it feels like to be misunderstood, yet we don’t always carry that understanding into how we read a child’s behaviour. We created this quiz to help adults connect their own experience of being judged with the executive function skills that may sit beneath what a young person does, so that empathy comes before assumption. Our hope is that a few minutes of honest reflection leads to more curious questions, and to support that genuinely helps.
