When behaviour feels inexplicable — whether in the classroom, workplace, or support setting, from coaching sessions to therapy rooms — it’s often stress and executive function breakdown at play, not a lack of effort.

What’s Really Going On?

The Hidden Cost of Chronic Stress

Burnout is a growing crisis:

  • Over 74% of UK workers report significant burnout symptoms — from emotional exhaustion to disengagement (Workplace Wellbeing Professional, MHFA England).

  • 82% of employees globally are at risk of burnout in 2025 (The Interview Guys).

Sustained stress is directly linked to impairments in memory, attention, and key executive function skills like organising, prioritising, and staying on track.

Executive Function & Burnout Go Hand in Hand

Meta-analyses show that individuals experiencing burnout perform worse on tasks requiring executive control — especially planning, task-switching, and decision-making (British Psychological Society, BrainFacts).

For employees with ADHD or executive function difficulties, this overload can escalate quickly into emotional exhaustion and burnout (Taylor & Francis, PMC).

Everyday Signs You’re Seeing More Than You Think

Here’s how executive function strain and stress often show up in day-to-day life:

  • Missed deadlines or shifts: It’s not laziness — it’s often difficulty with task sequencing and cognitive overload.

  • Disorganisation or overwhelm: Inbox chaos, forgotten meetings, multiple open tabs — all classic signs of executive function strain.

  • Emotional volatility: Irritability, low frustration tolerance, or sudden dips in mood often reflect mental fatigue — not a bad attitude.

  • Decision paralysis or overthinking: When prioritising becomes exhausting, even simple choices can stall.

These patterns don’t point to a lack of motivation. They often reflect a brain coping with elevated cognitive load, stress, or burnout.

Why It Matters — and What We Can Do

Burnout Has Real Costs

  • 91% of UK adults experienced high or extreme pressure in the past year; 34% felt this frequently (Mental Health UK).

  • 63% of UK employees now show signs of burnout — up from 51% two years ago (MHFA England).

Burnout isn’t just emotional — it affects physiology, relationships, and overall effectiveness at school and work.

Small Shifts. Big Impact.

Executive function challenges often show up as what we label “bad behaviour” or “poor performance”: lateness, avoidance, outbursts, missed deadlines. But these aren’t character flaws. They’re often signs that the brain is under pressure.

The challenge is that most people haven’t been trained to spot these patterns — let alone respond in ways that build regulation, trust, and long-term change. That’s where brain-based understanding makes a difference.

When we learn to look beneath the surface, we move from reacting to behaviour to supporting the person behind it.

Beyond Behaviour: See the Brain at Work

Understanding why behaviour happens — how stress and executive function challenges manifest — gives us a foundation for compassionate, effective support.
