What We Don’t See (Judgement & Executive Function)

Encourage Curiosity, Not Judgement: Watch and Share This Video with Your Students
You see the behaviour. But do you always see the struggle?
Why is someone always late? Why do they interrupt? Why can’t they just get started?
It’s easy to judge what we see without understanding what might be happening underneath.
Our short, thought-provoking video helps children and young people explore the connection between executive function and behaviour, and why what looks like laziness, disruption or a lack of effort may actually reflect challenges with planning, impulse control, emotional regulation or getting started.
It also explores the impact of judgement on confidence, friendships, mental health and a sense of belonging, encouraging pupils to question assumptions and consider what others might be experiencing.
Watch the video and share it with your students to spark meaningful conversations about empathy, understanding and the importance of looking beyond behaviour.
Ideal for assemblies, PSHE lessons and classroom discussions, with a reflection question to encourage further conversation.

Let’s encourage curiosity before judgement.

Key takeaways
  • We judge what we see, but we don’t always understand what’s happening underneath.
  • Everyday behaviours can point to executive function skills such as time management, impulse control and task initiation.
  • Executive functions are brain skills that help us plan, focus, manage emotions and get things done.
  • Judging without understanding can hurt a young person’s confidence, friendships and sense of belonging.
  • Stress makes executive function even harder to use.
  • Ask “What might they be finding difficult?” instead of “Why are they being difficult?”
  • You see the behaviour, but you don’t always see the struggle. Choose curiosity before judgement.
