PARENT TALK – Judgement & Executive Function: What We Don’t See

Judgement & Executive Function: What We Don’t See is a ready-to-present talk for parents and carers, designed for audiences with no prior knowledge of executive function. Across 25 slides, it explains what executive function is, introduces the 11 everyday skills in plain language, and shows how a simple instruction like “get ready for school” can ask a lot of a developing brain. It then looks at why these difficulties so often attract judgement (“lazy”, “rude”, “careless”), how repeated judgement can shape a child’s story, and how children make the same judgements of each other. The second half turns understanding into action, with words to try and things to do for real situations: instructions that aren’t getting through, homework that stays untouched, big emotions, a child who says “everyone thinks I’m stupid”, and the moment you’ve already snapped. It closes with a one-week experiment, a specific request to take to school and guidance on when a home strategy isn’t enough.

Why we developed the PARENT TALK – Judgement & Executive Function: What We Don’t See

Parents and carers are often on the receiving end of the same quick judgements as their children, yet are rarely given the language to understand what is happening beneath a behaviour. We created this talk to help families move from “they aren’t listening” towards “which part might be difficult?”, and to give them realistic, low-pressure things to try at home without making them feel they must get it perfect. Our aim is for facilitators to run it with confidence, so every parent leaves with one clear sentence and one useful support.
